In this practice set the quadratic equations are solved using completing the square method. In this method first you should check the coefficient of ‘x2’ in the given quadratic equation. If it is ‘1’ then it is good but if it is not ‘1’ then you should make it zero by dividing whole equation with the coefficient of ‘x2’.

Then afterwards equate the coefficient of ‘x’ with ‘2a’. After solving this you will get the value of ‘a’ then make the square of both the sides and you will get the value of ‘a2’.

Then write the given quadratic equation as it is and write the value of ‘a2’ with both plus and minus signs in between the terms of ‘x’ and the constant term.

Then solve the equation by performing appropriate mathematical operations and you get the solution of the given quadratic equation.

Practice Set 2.3

Solve the following quadratic equations by completing the square method.
(1) x2 + x – 20 = 0 (2) x2 + 2 x – 5 = 0 (3) m2 – 5 m = -3 (4) 9y2 – 12 y + 2 = 0 (5) 2y2 + 9y + 10 = 0 (6) 5×2 = 4x +7
